The McGriddle

A taste test that's happening five years too late

McGriddle

When Taco Bell revealed the Double Decker Taco in 1995 it was a testament to mankind's ingenuity and resiliance. After decades of dealing with broken hard taco shells, the engineers at Taco Bell HQ had figured out how to enjoy the best of both worlds. The structural integrity of a soft taco coupled with the satisfying crunch of the hard shells.

Almost a decade later, McDonald's entered the world of molecular gastronomy (no, the chicken nuggets don't count) for the masses with the McGriddle. The geniuses that created this breakfast sandwich took a previously non-portable meal, pancakes with syrup, and engineered it into a form where it could be enjoyed on-the-go.

The results are technically marvelous but a little dissapointing when it comes down to actual taste. The buns (is that what they are?) are sweet but don't make your hands sticky and actually do taste like pancakes with syrup. I guess my main problem with the sandwich is just that I'm not a fan of syrup with my eggs, cheese, and sausage. However, if you're the type of person who likes to pour syrup all over their breakfast whether it's bacon or a pancake, this might be for you.

The Treats Truck

"The prices may be fancy but the treats aren't." - Steve

While walking back to work with my lunch I passed the Treats Truck and couldn't resist standing in line and getting something for the first time. I won't go into it in detail but I must say I'm unimpressed. The rice chrispy treat is good but not great and the chocolate chip cookie was downright disappointing. Neither approached the homemade goodness that the Treats Truck aesthetic leads you to believe is awaiting you. All the hoopla over this truck has turned out to be more a result of their brilliant marketing than their average treats.

Chicken and Rice inflation hits Midtown

Trini Pak Boys to raise prices

Recession Rolls

Friday is looking like a Trini Pak cart day, largely because it'll be the last day you can get a large portion of their much beloved chicken and rice for $5. According to our top secret sources, the large will run you $6 starting Monday. The five dollar mark has always been the de facto standard for chicken and rice but it looks like that's starting to change. Rising oil prices = rising chicken and rice prices.

In other news, there's a new cart in town. It's called Caribbean spice and it appears to be an ofshoot of a now defunct Caribbean restaurant that was in Hell's Kitchen. It's located right next to the Biryani cart and, after trying it yesterday, I an assure you that it's pretty damn good. Midtown lunch has a full report.

Lastly, we've had the Philly Chicken Tikka a couple more times and have been doing our best to reassure the owner of the Biryani cart that it tastes pretty damn good. We've suggested that he add it to the menu and he said okay but have yet to see it make its debut. You can be sure that any new developments on that front will be reported here first so keep checking back!
