Office-Kitchen Lattes

Ingenuity at Work

Office-kitchen latte

As an unprofitable startup, it's pretty clear that everybody here at Lunchboxr is concerned about the recession. One cost cutting measure we've been taking is making more use of the Flavia coffee machines we have at work instead of taking a costly trip to the nearest Starbucks. Unfortunately, you can't survive on plain coffee alone, sometimes you just gotta have a latte.

In addition to the work we've been doing developing the Philly Chicken Tikka, part of the past week has also been devoted to experimenting with various methods of heating and frothing milk. Purchasing a milk frother has been suggested but that defeats the purpose of our quest for a cheaper latte. The Flavia machine has an espresso option so the espresso is there, we just needed the milk! After numerous attempts ranging from close to downright disasterous, we had almost resigned ourselves to the fact that it just couldn't be done, until today.

Less than half an hour ago, Anika came up with a breakthrough. Using a microwave and the container her egg-drop soup came in, she produced the beautiful latte you see in the photo above. Various methods of frothing such as blowing into the milk with a straw or pouring the milk back and forth between two cups failed to produce a nice persistent froth, vigorously shaking the milk in a container was the answer we had all been looking for.

While we have no illusions about driving Starbucks out of business with our discovery, we thought this was news worth sharing with the rest of the coffee-drinking community. If you've got more money saving tips using readily available office supplies, let us know!
